My Chemical Life

Connecting Hygiene to Chemistry.

Soap is a Base: Many people know that keeping clean is part of hygiene. When using a bar of soap, you may get some in your mouth and it has a bitter taste. Having a bitter taste is a physical property of a base. Like acids, bases have many common characteristics or properties. In aqueous solutions they feel slippery to the touch of skin. It may seem weird, but everytime you wash your hands you're actually using a base.
Acids: Soda has a very low pH level. So when you drink a soda, you may not realize it but you are taking off the enamel coating on your teeth. That is why brushing your teeth right after drinking a soda if very important. Without brushing immediately after it could also cause discoloration in your teeth. This rule also applies with many other low pH level items. Such as: limes, lemons, warheads, and many other sour tasting food and beverages.
Bacteria: Proper hygiene includes washing your hands regularly, in order to kill of bacteria. Bases like to pull hydrogens out of things, and organic or living things are filled with bacteria. The pH of swimming pools have to be careful to prevent the growth of bacteria and algae, just like what we have to do by washing our hands to fight off bacteria.
Nutrition & Organic ChemistryNutrition has alot to do with hygiene as well. It is very important to keep a nutritional, well-balanced diet. Keeping an average weight, and not eating too much "junk" food is extremely important. Getting the proteins you need are something you should make sure you're getting. Proteins are in beans, meats, etc. A little bit of carbohydrates are okay, however too many aren't healthy because all they are is lipids (fats and oils). Also, it is very importsnt to eat healthy and also be active, because if you start gaining lots of weight, you find that staying active, and working out won't occur as often. Also, if your over-weight it becomes harder and harder to maintain your hygiene. Many people on the heavier side lack hygiene because it is very hard for the to make sure everything is properly taken care of. If you or someone you know has this problem you may want to talk to them about becoming active, and eating right.

CHNOPS:

C (Carbon Dioxide): Carbon Dioxide is a gas. Gases are used in hygiene by...
H (Hydrogen): Hydrogen is energy. When you blow dry your hair or straiten it, that uses energy.
N (Nitrogen): Nitrogen is colorless, tasteless, odorless, ect. Everything that has to do with hygiene, pretty much has color, odor, and taste.
O (Oxygen): Oxygen is the air we breath. If your standing outside, inside, in a bathroom, or in a room dealing with something that revolves around hygiene, then oxygen is tying in with hygiene.
P (Phosphorus): Phosphorus is a mineral. There are minerals in toothpaste.
S (Sulfur): Sulfur is...
